Q: What attracted you to Rice University's Master of Global Affairs program?
A: What attracted me most to the MGA program at Rice was the outstanding faculty and staff. Reading through the backgrounds of the professors and learning about their depth of experience made me excited to join the program and take their classes. I was also very drawn to the connection with the Baker Institute. It is such a respected and nationally recognized institution, and I knew that being able to observe and participate in policy discussions there would expand my network, expose me to meaningful leadership conversations, and help elevate my career.
Q: What was your career like prior to the MGA program?
A: Before joining the program, I had a solid foundation in international affairs, but I felt ready to grow. I wanted to expand my professional network and be exposed to higher-level, expert conversations on global issues. My experience up to that point made me realize how important it was to understand the interaction between international institutions, governments, and the private sector. The MGA program offered the structure and mentorship I needed to strengthen that understanding.
Q: Where are you now in your work and what do you do?
A: I now work as a Strategic Communications and Public Affairs Consultant in the energy sector for a global consultancy firm. My work involves supporting major energy companies on stakeholder engagement, policy and permitting analysis as well as external and internal communications. I use the research skills and global perspective I gained during the MGA program every day. My role requires constant interaction with diverse stakeholders, including government entities, industry associations, community leaders, and subject matter experts. The program prepared me extremely well for this.
Q: What was the highlight or most memorable moment of your MGA experience?
A: The highlight of my MGA experience was the opportunity to interact with global leaders and diplomats through events at the Baker Institute. I had the chance to meet high-level officials, including representatives from my home country of Colombia. I also attended events with prominent United States officials, including a former Vice President. Being part of those conversations and witnessing international decision-making in person was unforgettable and deeply inspiring.
Q: What was your favorite class in the MGA program?
A: It is difficult to choose a single class because every course in the MGA program added something important to my academic and professional development. I can confidently say that I benefited from each one. Some of my favorites include International Institutions and Development, U.S. Foreign Policy and International Crisis Management, which I genuinely use in my work almost every day.
Q: What would you say to someone considering Rice's Master of Global Affairs?
A: I would strongly encourage them to take the opportunity. The MGA program is a true career accelerator. The curriculum is rigorous but accessible to people from different professional backgrounds, and the program provides invaluable exposure to researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders. Leaving a job to go back to school can feel like a big decision, but the experience, the network and all the learning you gain from this program far outweigh the temporary pause in full-time work. It opens doors, broadens your platform, and gives you skills and relationships that will stay with you throughout your professional life.
